Get a card total closer to or equal to 21 than the dealer, without going over 21 (bust). If your total exceeds 21, you automatically lose that round.
Number cards (2–10) are worth their face value. Face cards (J, Q, K) are all worth 10. An Ace can be worth either 1 or 11, depending on your hand — chosen automatically to give you the best possible value.
"Hit" means you request one more card from the dealer. You can keep hitting as long as your hand total does not exceed 21. Common strategy: Hit if your hand total is 11 or below.
"Stand" means you're satisfied with your current hand and don't want any more cards. The dealer will then reveal their hidden card and play according to house rules (typically standing on 17 or higher).
"Double Down" lets you double your original bet after receiving your first two cards, on the condition that you take only one additional card. Optimal strategy: Double Down when your hand total is 9, 10, or 11.
"Split" can be performed when your first two cards are of equal value. You separate them into two independent hands and must place an additional bet equal to your original wager. Each hand is then played separately.
If your first two cards are an Ace + any 10-value card (10, J, Q, or K), you've got a "Natural Blackjack"! This typically pays 3:2 — higher than a regular win, which pays 1:1.
When the dealer's first card is an Ace, you're offered an "Insurance" option — a side bet worth half your original wager. If the dealer gets Blackjack, Insurance pays 2:1. Most experts recommend avoiding Insurance unless you're counting cards.
